What Are Minerals and Why Do I Care?

Mar 30, 2025

Minerals are inorganic elements that are needed for proper cellular function of the body.

They are involved in every cell, pathway, hormone, process (literally, EVERYTHING) that occurs in the body. Without proper levels and ratios of minerals, things will never operate as they should. For example, so many people believe they have a sluggish liver, so they start doing liver support. That's great! But what is the liver made of? Cells...just like every single other part of the body. If your cells can't properly detox or allow proper nutrients in, then your liver will never function well no matter how much dandelion root tea you drink or the number of castor oil packs you do.

***P.S. Inorganic simply means that it is not something created by life or something living or does not contain compounds like carbon atoms. It is a scientific term, not one meaning that the minerals are synthetic or sprayed with pesticides 😉 .***

How can we know if we have enough minerals or if their in the right ratio with one another?

Blood tests are not always great indicators because God designed the body to maintain homeostasis (steady level of everything in the blood). Therefore, deficiencies or imbalances won’t show up in the blood until it’s extremely late and things are going very wrong, usually resulting in symptoms or disease diagnoses. The body will pull elements from tissues (like calcium from the bone) into the blood in order to maintain homeostasis.

The best way to assess your mineral status and balances in the body is through your hair. Hair tissue mineral analysis looks at your mineral levels and ratios from a soft tissue point of view, which is much more accurate than blood for most minerals and even in assessing heavy metal burden in the body.

Even if you have sufficient mineral levels (hint: almost everyone has some level of deficiency with their first test), it’s important to know the ratios of minerals. Every single nutrient and mineral affects each other, either antagonistically or synergistically.

Since minerals are involved in every process in the body, it doesn’t matter if you’re struggling with hormonal imbalance, thyroid dysfunction, infertility, irregular periods, or any diagnosis, knowing your mineral status is going to help get to the root cause of any of these problems.
